The Sounds of Carving

 A couple of readers have asked me why I call my blog, "THE SOUNDS OF CARVING." I must be honest and admit that these are not my own words; they were a gift from a blind teenager.
During the decade of the 1990’s, the period when we were most actively engaged in the process of building the Empire State Carousel, we opened a work-in-progress exhibit at our small museum/workshop on Long Island and conducted regular tours for our guests.

A typical Saturday saw 75 visitors at our remodeled barn; hardly a week went by without a weekday visit from a scout troop, a 4th grade class or an adult club. We became a particular favorite of senior day care centers and of residential facilities for the developmentally disabled. One of these visits illustrates the mystique of woodcarving and the surprising way it can reach a hidden place inside a private space.
